The Synoptic Swift Synergy – Catching Gamma-Ray Bursts Before They Fly
نویسنده
چکیده
The advent of large panoramic photometric surveys of the sky offers the possibly of exploring the association of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with supernovae. To date, a few gamma-ray bursts have been connected possibly with supernovae: GRB 980425 – SN 1998bw, GRB 011121 – SN 2001ke, GRB 970228 and GRB 980326. A combination of a large detection rate of GRBs and rapid coverage of a large portion of the sky to faint magnitude limits offers the possibility of detecting a supernova preceding an associated GRB or at least placing limits on the rate of association between these two phenomena and the time delay between them. This would provide important constraints on theoretical models for gamma-ray bursts. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts

Intensity Distribution and Luminosity Function of the Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts
Using the sample of long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift-BAT before June 2007, we measure the cumulative distribution of the peak photon fluxes (logN–logP ) of the Swift bursts. Compared with the BATSE sample, we find that the two distributions are consistent after correcting the band pass difference, suggesting that the two instruments are sampling the same population of bursts. We a...
متن کاملThe Synergy of Gamma-ray Burst Detectors in the Glast Era
Simultaneous observations by the large number of gamma-ray burst detectors operating in the GLAST era will provide the spectra, lightcurves and locations necessary for studying burst physics and testing the putative relations between intrinsic burst properties. The detectors’ energy band and the accumulation timescale of their trigger system affect their sensitivity to hard vs. soft and long vs...
متن کاملGrb Afterglow Plateaus and Gravitational Waves: Multi-messenger Signature of a Millisecond Magnetar?
The existence of a shallow decay phase in the early X-ray afterglows of gamma-ray bursts is a common feature. Here we investigate the possibility that this is connected to the formation of a highly magnetized millisecond pulsar, pumping energy into the fireball on timescales longer than the prompt emission. In this scenario the nascent neutron star could undergo a secular bar-mode instability, ...
متن کاملSwift gamma – ray bursts consistent with the Ghirlanda relation ?
A few tight correlations linking several properties of gamma–ray bursts (GRBs), namely the spectral peak energy, the total radiated energy, and the afterglow break time, have been discovered with pre-Swift GRBs. They were used to constrain the cosmological parameters together with type-Ia supernovae. However, the tightness of these correlations is a challenge to GRB models. We explore the effec...
متن کاملCorrelations of Prompt and Afterglow Emission in Swift Long and Short Gamma Ray Bursts
Correlation studies of prompt and afterglow emissions from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) between different spectral bands has been difficult to do in the past because few bursts had comprehensive and intercomparable afterglow measurements. In this paper1 we present a large and uniform data set for correlation analysis based on bursts detected by the Swift mission. For the first time, short and long b...
